Go Huskies!

We decided it was time to let Jaxson play a team sport this fall. I let him decide between soccer or flag football and he excitedly chose football. It's no secret that genetically he is more brains than brawn so I was a little concerned about how it would go. You see Jaxson likes to be the in control and when he's not he gets frustrated. (Okay that's an understatement.) His first practice was a little emotional for him and Steve and I gave him a pep talk (over and over again) about trying his best and not getting upset when things don't go his way. Honestly, it is beyond embarrassing to have the only 6 year old on the football field crying and pouting. The next couple practices went much better. Jaxson likes to learn about the strategy of the game and the different positions he gets to play. His coach actually taught them a couple plays. They picked the team name The Huskies. Go Dawgs! 

Then it was time for his first game. I was nervous but also excited for him. Jaxson was really excited about the cleats I bought for him. When we arrived at the field he got to pick his jersey number and his coach told him he got to be the running back this game. He was really excited because he loves to run! At the beginning of the game he had to sit out and he became antsy to sub in. Finally it was his turn to play. He was ready. Ready. Set. Hike. Jaxson runs to the quarterback arms up ready to get the ball and run for a touch down! Instead the quarter back keeps the ball, pushed through the line, and runs a touchdown himself. All the kids ran after him in a big stampede, except Jaxson. He stood in the middle of the field wringing his hands with anger. He was not happy about it. The next couple plays he just shut down. The coach had to console him. He came back out of the game really upset. We consoled him and gave him another pep talk about how they are a team and not everyone gets the ball. They lost. At least he got some snacks at the end of the game. Playing as part of a team is a new learning experience for him. He is still excited to play and I hope he grows through this whole experience. In the meantime we will be cheering for him from the sidelines. Go Huskies!
